Hamilton, Ontario: A Guide to Things to See, Do, and Eat
Staying at our Hamilton property? Here's a real guide to the city - not a sales pitch, just what's genuinely worth your time, organized by what kind of day you're planning.
Getting Oriented
Hamilton sits at the western tip of Lake Ontario, wedged between the lake and the Niagara Escarpment, locally called "the Mountain." That geography is the reason for two of the city's best-known features: a working waterfront and more than 120 waterfalls within city limits, more than almost anywhere else in Canada. Our property is a 5 minute drive from downtown, putting most of what's below within easy reach.
Things to See
The waterfront. Bayfront Park and the surrounding waterfront trails are Hamilton's ongoing revitalization success story - walking paths, green space, and views across the harbour. You'll also find HMCS Haida, a retired Royal Canadian Navy destroyer now docked and open to visitors, and Theodore Tugboat for anyone traveling with kids.
James Street North. Once industrial, now Hamilton's arts and culture corridor - galleries, independent shops, and a strong food scene packed into a walkable stretch. It's one of the best ways to get a feel for the city's ongoing transformation in a single afternoon.
Hamilton's waterfalls. With well over 100 waterfalls scattered across the city and surrounding escarpment, Hamilton has earned the nickname "Waterfall City." Albion Falls and Webster Falls are two of the better-known, more accessible ones if you want a short hike with a real payoff.
Art Gallery of Hamilton. The oldest and largest public art gallery in Southern Ontario, with a permanent collection that includes Alex Colville's well-known Horse and Train. Worth a stop if you want an indoor option or a couple of hours out of the weather.
Things to Do
Hike the Bruce Trail. Hamilton sits along a stretch of Ontario's oldest and longest marked hiking trail, which follows the Niagara Escarpment. You don't need to commit to a long hike, there are several access points near the city offer shorter routes with escarpment views.
Royal Botanical Gardens. Just outside the city in Dundas/Burlington, one of the largest botanical gardens in the country, with different seasonal appeal depending on when you're visiting, spring blooms are the highlight, but it's worth a visit in any season.
Catch a show or game at FirstOntario Centre. Hamilton's main indoor arena hosts concerts, hockey, and other events downtown - worth checking their schedule against your travel dates.
Explore Ottawa Street North. Historically Hamilton's fabric and textile district, now a mix of that same heritage alongside newer shops, cafés, and design-focused businesses. A quieter, less-touristed alternative to James Street North if you want a more local feel.
Where to Eat
Hamilton's food scene is genuinely strong and changes fast enough that we'd rather point you toward the right areas than name specific restaurants that might not be the same by the time you visit:
- James Street North: the highest concentration of independent restaurants and cafés in the city, worth simply walking and picking whatever looks good
- Locke Street South: a smaller, well-regarded strip known for its restaurant density relative to its size
- Ottawa Street North: a mix of longtime diners and newer spots in the same corridor as the fabric shops
- Hamilton Farmers' Market: downtown, indoors, a good option for produce, prepared food, and a real sense of the city's food culture in one stop
Practical Notes
- Hamilton is roughly 60-90 minutes from Toronto and well within reach of Niagara Falls for a day trip, if you're looking to extend your visit beyond the city itself.
- Many of the waterfalls and escarpment trails involve uneven terrain so it's worth checking conditions and appropriate footwear before heading out, especially outside summer months.
